Dizziness In Pregnancy And Their Remedies

Dizziness is a typical complaint during the nine months of gestation. When dizziness, high sweating, tachycardia, and, even if more rarely, fainting take us by surprise, here are the remedies to avoid them During pregnancy, natural remedies for dizziness consist of natural supplements that provide mineral salts, including magnesium, potassium, and iron.

During the sweet expectation, one may feel more tired than usual or suddenly feel disturbances from which one had not suffered previously, such as dizziness, excessive sweating, and tachycardia (increased heart rate) up to real fainting.

All these phenomena are normal during pregnancy; in the collective imagination, fainting and dizziness are the first sign that defines a woman in “sweet expectation.” We must, therefore, not be excessively alarmed, even if it is always good to report them promptly to your gynecologist.

The Causes Of Dizziness In Pregnancy

The origin of these disturbances can be identified with different causes, but the main one is an overall weakening of the future mother’s body. During the nine months, all the organs in the pregnant woman’s body are forced to work in a new and more intense way to allow the normal development of the unborn child.

And it is precise because of this work overload that disturbances, such as fainting or dizziness, can be created in the future mother but destined to disappear spontaneously after the baby’s birth. Furthermore, due to the action of hormones, blood pressure is lowered.

In particular, progesterone stimulates a vasodilation mechanism (a process of widening of the veins and arteries) to send the fetus a greater flow of blood and, therefore, of nutrients and oxygen, also producing effects on blood pressure values, in fact reducing it slightly, but rarely associated with particular problems for the future mother or the child.

Suppose the pregnant woman already suffers from hypotension (low blood pressure). In that case, this disorder will be more annoying: in this case, and other related pathologies could also occur, i.e., loss of balance, blurred vision, fainting, cold sweats, and even nausea.

Tips And Remedies For Dizziness In Pregnancy

The remedies for vertigo cannot ignore some precautions to keep in mind to avoid taking substances potentially harmful to the fetus.

  1. Have snacks: avoid staying on an empty stomach to avoid feeling lightheaded.
  2. Stay upright: lift your legs as soon as possible. If you are at home, lie down on the bed or sofa, keeping your feet higher than your head, thus promoting ” venous return ” (i.e., blood return to the heart). If you are on the street, stop as soon as you feel dizzy, and sit down (wherever you are, it doesn’t matter) instead of proceeding.
  3. Avoid baths or showers with too hot water: prefer tepid water.
  4. Balanced diet: the foods we eat are our primary care, especially during pregnancy. To avoid dizziness, prefer light and digestible meals, drink plenty of water and consume lots of raw fruit and vegetables because they contain mineral salts and vitamins in quantity.
  5. Natural supplements: if the supply of mineral salts and vitamins from the diet is not enough, in herbal medicine, there are specific prenatal supplements containing mineral salts such as potassium and magnesium, which help raise blood pressure. Iron deficiency can also cause dizziness and lightheadedness. Other ailments can be night cramps, headaches, chest pain in the region of the heart of a constricting type, and anemia.

We speak of anemia when the hemoglobin has decreased, and the values are lower than 11g/dl in a pregnant woman. Hemoglobin is contained in red blood cells and is responsible for oxygen transport. Some of the most frequent anemias that can be combated with food are iron deficiency anemia ( sideropenia ) and anemia due to vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency ( megaloblastic anemia ).
