Dry, chapped, or reddened skin in winter? The fault often lies with the cold, which causes natural lesions (cracks), redness, or cracking (sometimes painful) on the hands, face, or feet due to the extreme dryness of the skin. We have already had the opportunity to look at natural remedies for dry skin. However, more than these expedients may be needed with the onset of extreme cold.

First, it is necessary to respect a few rules to prevent skin dryness; cracks and redness are only a consequence and aggravate the problem. Remember that during the winter, it is good to always hydrate the skin by drinking plenty of water (at least 1.5 liters per day) and consuming products rich in water and fiber (fruits and vegetables). 

Even if the cold is biting, do not expose yourself directly to intense heat sources, such as stoves and fireplaces, as excessive heat can cause a temperature rise that is harmful to skin tissue. At home, ensure the temperature never exceeds 19 C°: setting the radiators to their maximum is useless to walk around in short sleeves. This further causes deleterious thermal excursions between two exit points, continued stress to the skin, and excessive energy expenditure. 

In the shower or your bath, avoid water that is too hot: heat tends to deprive the skin of its natural oils, just like harsh soaps, detergents, or perfumes.If, despite everything, your skin remains dry, arid, and irritated, then it would be a good idea to use a few natural remedies, most of which have been successfully tested by our grandmothers, who made moisturizing products at home to combat dull or dry skin. It is good to fight against chapped skin; nature helps us with many natural remedies. One of them is a moisturizing banana mask. Of course, the fruits must be organic… Here are the ingredients:

  1. One banana
  2. ½ organic lemon
  3. Two spoons of olive oil

Preparation 

Mash the peeled banana in a bowl using a fork. Add lemon juice and oil. Mix well to obtain a homogeneous cream, then apply it on the face. Let it soak in for 5 minutes. Then rinse your face with plenty of lukewarm water, then use your usual moisturizer. Repeat the operation every day. If you want to deeply nourish your skin and restore its vigor and radiance, whether on the face, hands, or feet, here is another nourishing treatment based on apples and pears. Ingredients :

  1. 1.½ ripe apple
  2. ½ ripe pear
  3. One spoon of fresh cream

Preparation 

Blend the peeled apple and pear; add the fresh cream; mix well. Apply the mixture to the face, massaging gently; Avoid the eye area. Leave for 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water and remove any residue with a small sponge. Repeat the process once every two days. Dry skin: to make a regenerating serum, the ideal complement to the treatments above, you will need the following:

  1. One glass of milk
  2. Five fresh mallow leaves

Preparation 

Heat the milk in a small saucepan, add the mallow leaves, and bring to a boil. Filter, and let cool. Once the serum is lukewarm, dab it on your face with a cotton ball at least twice a week.  An excellent nourishing cream prevents chapping; do not hesitate to wear cotton gloves at night, to intensify the soothing effect. Remember to combine these treatments with a few good habits, such as washing your face, in the evening or the morning, with a natural makeup remover made from marigolds (calendula) or adding St. John’s wort to your moisturizer with almonds.

Like many essential oils, St. John’s wort and calendula oil is a cure-all for dry, chapped skin from the cold. Apply a few drops morning and evening to your hands and feet to regain silky, perfectly hydrated skin. Add shea butter and aloe vera pulp twice daily to relieve your hands. Their action is hydrating, nourishing, and emollient. It only takes a small amount to achieve impressive results.

Last Tip:

  1. Before bed, apply your favorite oil or cream to your hands and feet.
  2. Put on microfiber or organic cotton gloves or socks: the heat generated by the fabric during the night intensifies the effects of the lotion and leaves your skin supple and healthy.
