Frizz In Hair: Causes And Solutions

We all know bad hair days when our hair is just a bunch of indomitable frizz! Today, we are looking into the phenomenon to understand what frizz is and why it forms. The good news is that you can have straight, frizz-free hair or beautiful, frizz-free curls. You can tame them using an effective product, such as an anti-frizz serum or pro tips!

Frizz, What Is It?

Frizz is a misalignment of the hair fibres: the hair’s scales open and rise. Standing up or curling, independent of the rest of the hair, creates that frothy mass effect. These little wisps stick out or wrap around themselves in multiple directions and cause different textures and a messy feel! The appearance of the hair is dry and frizzy when at other times, it is soft and defined.

Why Do We Have Frizz?

If we had to remember only one thing, it’s that frizz appears on dehydrated hair. On well-hydrated hair, the scales are closed and, therefore, smooth. The appearance is silky. It is dehydration that causes the scales to lift. One of the crucial factors is the climate. In humid weather, dehydrated hair tries to absorb the water in the air. The scales stand up to capture the ambient humidity, and we end up with lots of frizz.

The nature of the hair is also in question. Thick hair, frizzy hair and curly hair are the most prone to frizz. Hair permeability also comes into play. Porous hair fails to retain moisture in the hair fibre and therefore swells more easily than low-porous hair. This is often the case with wavy or curly hair and white or grey hair, which becomes more porous with age.

During regrowth, the baby hairs around the face often do as they, please! This little fine hair is very prone to frizz. Finally, all aggressions of the friction type (drying your hair by rubbing hard, clothing, pillowcase but also repeated brush strokes, the fact of constantly touching your hair or twisting locks) will contribute to the production of frizz.

This is also the case, of course, as soon as heating appliances are used too frequently or at too high a temperature—which explains why, sometimes, even after straightening or blow-drying, we still have one or two frizz on the top of the head!

Five Tips To Get Rid Of Frizz

Rinse With Cold Water

It takes a bit of courage, but it’s the easiest and most economical solution to eliminating frizz naturally! Nothing like a jet of cold water to seal the scales and thus smooth the cuticles; plus, as a bonus, you get shinier hair. Be careful and we still start by rinsing the hair with warm water to eliminate shampoo or care residues; then, we gradually lower the temperature to end up cold.

Adopt A Soft Shampoo

When you want to reduce frizz, you must pay attention to the composition and the shampoo frequency. Some shampoos contain too aggressive detergents and therefore strip the hair fibre. Instead, we turn to gentle, sulphate-free formulas that trap dirt without damaging the hair. In the same vein, we banish daily washing, which does more harm than good, and we try not to exceed two shampoos per week, three if we have oily hair.

Focus On Proper Care

Indomitable curly hair is not inevitable; we can improve the situation with well-targeted care. The first goal is to boost the hair’s moisture level so that the scales are smooth and seal together. After the shampoo, we apply a conditioner or, why not, a homemade mask (or both) to coat the hair fibre.

They are chosen according to the nature or condition of their hair: curly hair, dry hair, broken hair… Organic enthusiasts can turn to natural anti-frizz to remove slight frizz like coconut oil or cider vinegar or concoct a grandmother’s recipe like a banana or lemon mask. ‘attorney.  Of course, an anti-frizz treatment is easily found on the market.

By opting for this kind of product, one can prevent unruly hair. Several brands market these effective treatments on short hair as well as on long hair. We find, in particular, an anti-frizz mask at John Frieda, a Kérastase oil, an anti-frizz and thermo-protective treatment at La Belle Boucle, a smoothing cream from Schwarzkopf or Dessange, and even a frizz eraser at Franck Provost.

Dry Gently

As we know, it is when the hair is wet that it is most vulnerable, so the drying step is significant. Down with the terrycloth towel and too invigorating friction! Instead, proceed with a microfiber towel gently dabbed all over the hair to absorb moisture. Then either let it air dry or use the hair dryer. In this case, you can apply a thermal-protective treatment beforehand, opt for a lukewarm heat setting, and finish with cold air.

Cut Regularly

The split ends greatly promote frizz, and the problem when you don’t take care of your ends is that the damaged part goes back up more and more. It is best to plan a cut at regular intervals to prevent them from reaching the root and causing frizz. It ends up trimmed every two or three months which means less frizz!
