Is Vitamin D3 Better Than Vitamin D2?

It is the famous “sunshine” vitamin! Vitamin D is not for the lazy. In our latitudes, the sun most often shines in its absence: hence the interest, especially in winter, in an additional supply of vitamin D through food, even if the body’s daily needs are only 0.0025 mg per day. In reality, there are two (and even several) vitamins D: but concerning the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus by the intestine, these are vitamins D3 (cholecalciferol), which is of animal origin, and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), of vegetable origin. 

Since vitamin D3 is similar to human vitamin D, it is more effective. It is found in seafood (cod liver oil, salmon, herring, sardines, oysters), egg yolk, beef liver, dairy products (milk and butter, Emmental and Comté cheeses), and mushrooms.

No Link To Non-Skeletal Disorders

Cardiovascular diseases, multiple sclerosis, and even cancer, a vitamin D deficiency, would be the cause. This is false. Vitamin D is only involved in skeletal disorders. On the other hand, a pathology that causes a deterioration of the general state also results in a vitamin D deficiency. Two populations are more commonly exposed to vitamin D deficiency: infants in countries with little sunshine, where milk is enriched with vitamin D, and the elderly, women in particular, whose skeletons are weakened from menopause.

 But no sexism; people in institutions suffer from this deficiency because they go out little outside. In other extreme cases, rickets affecting malnourished populations and people with osteomalacia (generalized demineralization of the skeleton) are also a concern. Knowing what the right dose of sunshine is required depends on each person’s skin and latitude: sun treatment is year-round in California. In Spain, just going out for ten minutes a day is enough. Since vitamin D is fat-soluble, your vacation is normally enough to fill you up for the rest of the year. This does not prevent the opposite cases: there are inhabitants of Hawaii, to be deficient!
