Protein Bread: Does This Bread Make You Lean?

Protein bread contains few carbohydrates but a lot of protein and should help you lose weight. We’ll tell you what’s behind it, and have also picked a great recipe! Oh yes – we all love our bread. Whether for breakfast or dinner: bread is simply part of it! It tastes delicious, fresh from the bakery with a bit of butter and topped with delicious cold cuts. It’s stupid that conventional bread contains a lot of carbohydrates, and you can’t eat it if you’re on a low-carb diet. And protein bread seems to be the perfect solution. Protein bread contains a lot of proteins that should help you lose weight. We’ll tell you what’s on it!

Protein Diet

No carbohydrates, but all the more protein – many swear by the protein diet. Pasta, sweets, and bread are taboo, but you can eat as many eggs, meat, or fish as you want. The good thing about it: you don’t have to go hungry and still lose weight. Protein also helps you build muscle and keeps you full longer than carbohydrates, which is why you automatically eat less.

Why Should Protein Bread Be Healthier Than Ordinary Bread?

At first glance, protein bread does not differ from ordinary bread. If you touch it, however, you will notice that the consistency is somehow different: it feels a bit sticky and airier than standard whole wheat bread. The taste of protein bread is also different. Protein bread promises to be significantly higher in protein than regular bread, which is especially good for you if you exercise. In addition, unlike traditional bread, it contains hardly any carbohydrates and is ideal for a low-carb diet.

What Is Protein Bread Made Of?

Protein bread consists mainly of vegetable protein, soy meal, linseed, soy flour, bran, or apple fiber. Protein bread contains just 11 g of carbohydrates per 100 g. For comparison: An ordinary mixed rye bread contains around 46 g of carbohydrates with the same amount, which is more than four times as much. Regarding protein content, protein bread also performs significantly better: 100 g contains around 24 g of protein, while conventional bread only has 6 g.

Fewer Carbohydrates, More Fat

Before you rush to the nearest bakery to buy the protein bread, you should look at the nutritional information. Because to replace the missing carbohydrates, many oilseeds are added to the protein bread during production. And these, in turn, increase the fat content of the bread. 100 g protein bread has an average of 260 kcal and fat content of 12 g. A simple mixed rye bread, on the other hand, only has 217 kcal and 1 g of fat.

What Do Nutrition Experts Say About Protein Bread?

Silke Restemeyer from the German Nutrition Society (DGE) is critical of protein bread. “The approach of removing carbohydrates from bread as the original, important supplier of carbohydrates and turning bread into a supplier of protein is fundamentally questionable. In a diet with the usual foods, we have typical suppliers for every nutrient, e.g., cheese for fat and protein; bread and other Grain products for carbohydrates and fiber .”

In addition, the nutrition expert confirms: “Weight loss, i.e., fat loss, is a question of energy balance and not a question of when-which-nutrients-eat. Regarding energy content, protein loaves of bread often do worse than other selected loaves of bread, and they have the highest energy content.” Allergy sufferers should also take a close look at the list of ingredients. It often contains lupine protein, to which many people are allergic.

Tip For Everyone Who Wants To Lose Weight Long-Term:

Eating lots of vegetables, fruit, and whole-grain products is best. Low-fat milk and milk products are also suitable. In addition, fish once or twice a week and up to 300 – 600 g of low-fat meat and low-fat sausages per week. Sweets and fast food should be eaten infrequently and in small amounts.”
